DON'T MISS THE BUENOS AIRES POWWOW ON JULY 30 Jul 3, 2004

This is not only going to be a national event: people are coming from many parts of the world. Just look up the Buenos Aires Powwow and start packing your baggage... It will be a wondeful experience to meet people from many countries (USA, Spain, New Zealand, Brazil, Perú, Netherlands, Uruguay, Chile, only to mention a few) and as I already mentioned, Henry will also be there.

We are so delighted to know that so many visitors are coming from abroad, that we do not want to mention some and ommit others. The complete list of visitors is in the forum on the Buenos Aires powwow, which really started yesterday and will continue at least until the day after tomorrow. But today is the central gathering.

I believe this is the first time that the capacity of the place has been exceeded and I feel very happy to know the tremendous sucess that José Luis, Quique and others have had organizing this event. Tonight we will be meeting old internet friends whom we had never met personally.

Just let me give you a tip if you are coming from abroad: Argentina is not only Buenos Aires, a beautiful european style city. There is far more to see. Just go to these links below and have a look. There you will see Bariloche, the South American Switzerland (it is the ski season just now), Calafate, the South American Alaska, Ushuaia, the southernmost city of the world, Puerto Madryn (the whales are already there), the train to the Clouds in Salta, the Iguazù waterfalls. A ticket in a luxury bus to one of these destinations will cost you anything between 100 and 150 Dollars for the round trip; don´t regret it later if you had the chance and did not make it...

Don´t just visit Buenos Aires. The whole country is waiting to show you its beauties.

WELCOME TO BUENOS AIRES!

The Martial Glacier (Ushuaia), a beautiful four and a half mile walk Aug 14, 2004

There are not many places where to go in Ushuaia, but everything you have to see is really beautiful. Hotels are expensive by local rates, the same as in El Calafate, but that is not a reason for not going. You will really enjoy it. Three or four days should be enough, including a visit to this glacier, a cruise by the Beagle Channel, and a visit to the Tierra del Fuego National Park, which includes Lago Roca and Lapataia.

And here is a small but very nice photo selection of Argentina:

Just to give you an idea where you can go in Argentina, I am posting this page, but I believe you will find better rates if you buy the tours in Buenos Aires:
http://www.azeta.com.ar/ipatagonia.html

A word of caution: it you don´t want to pay international rates at the hotels (and this advice is also valid for El Calafate) go to economy hotels, or check the rates by internet before travelling. At Ushuaia and El Calafate most hotels are charging higher rates to foreigners. These are the only areas in Argentina where this is happening, except for five-star hotels, that apply this policy in the whole country.

It is the only SeaWorld of Argentina, some 180 miles southeast of Buenos Aires and some 120 miles north of Mar del Plata. It is a full-day tour from Mar del Plata, that costs only 15 US Dollars, including the admission to the acquarium and to the shows.

The premises are very complete and large, but the main attractions are the orca and dolphins show, and the sea lions show, plus the theater representation on the banks of the lake. Also "submarine encounter" where you can nearly touch the dolphins, if it were not for the glass...

Of course, there are many other attractions. Let the photos talk by themselves.

Mundo Marino also has its small train to take the children for a ride through the park.

The tours from Mar del Plata, return trip plus admission, cost 15 US Dollars. To have an average meal at the place, you will spend anything around 5 US Dollars. A coke costs less than one dollar.

True, the really big fish (specially Pacific salmon) are caught in the Corcovado river, some 70 miles away, but I was not aware of this when I went. I have heard of 50 pound salmon caught in that river. However, the Corcovado river could be dangerous, on fisherman was drowned while I was in the area. In any case, I was more interested in the beautiful natural sceneries of the Los Alerces National Park, and fishing trout was a good excurse to enjoy them.

The Los Alerces National Park is located some 30 miles to the west of Esquel, from where you can travel to Puerto Madryn for whale watching (the bus takes 9 hours to get thre). It is a beautiful area, in a more primitive condition than the Bariloche area, which I am sure you will enjoy.

PHOTO: We started our fishing tour here, on lake Futalaufquen. Although the record of the national park is a 30 pound rainbow trout, it is unusual to catch trout of more than 4 pounds.

The Los Alerces National Park offers very nice fishing in the midst of beautiful sceneries. The name of the park comes from the Alerce, a tree that belongs to the Sequoia family. There is a 2600-year specimen in the visited area, but there are other in the intangible area that are 5,000 years old, with a diameter of 17 feet.

The Arrayan is another special tree that may be seen in this park.

PHOTO: Typical vegetation of the zone. An arrayan on the right hand side.

The half day fishing tour is expensive (70 Dollars) because the fishing guide has to drive you in his car to the departing point (45 miles each way), and then take you another 5 hours on his motor boat looking for the best fishing points in the lake. Considering this, the price is reasonable.

PHOTO: Lake Futalaufquen. The new road to El Bolsón goes through here. Although most bus services to Bariloche go through the direct road, there are also bus services on this new road.

The new catch and release fishing regulations require that you take only one trout home and return the other trout to the water with the lowest possible damage.

PHOTO: This first trout was lucky, it was returned to the water.

In few words, one has the opportunity of enjoying beautiful sceneries while fishing.

PHOTO: Arrayanes river.

It is important to consult the weather forecast before going on a fishing outing, since the motor boat has no roof and you could get really soaked...

PHOTO: Trout are delicious, I ate this one...

In any case, the scenery is really beautiful, and I really enjoyed the contact with nature.

Regards from Mar del Plata.

Although there are roads that border some of the lakes of this National Park (the new road to El Bolsón borders lakes Futalaufquen, Verde and Rivadavia, and some other lakes like lake Kruger can be reached by earth roads), the navigation of lakes Futalaufquen, Verde and Menéndez is a fascinating experience. Of course, it is still more beautiful in winter, when snow covers all the peaks in the Andes.

PHOTO: Entrance to the Los Alerces (the larches) National Park

This is a very long tour (not less than twelve hours) including road transportation from Esquel (40 miles each way) and about three hours of navigation each way divided in two sections (lakes Futalaufquen and Verde, then a 40 minute walk, navigation of lake Menendez, and an hour and a half walk to lake Cisne and the thousands year old larches, river Cisne with its waterfalls and rapids... That is why this tour is expensive (110 pesos or 37 dollars including road transportation), but it is really worthwhile.

PHOTO: The first river we cross is the Percy river. I caught my first rainbow trout there over 50 years ago.

Before we reach lake Futalaufquen we have already crossed streams with crystaline waters...

PHOTO: Lake Futalaufquen

PHOTO: An arrayan (myrtle) on the coast of the lake

After navigating the north branch of lake Futalaufquen we navigate the Río de los Arrayanes (the Myrtle river), one of the most beautiful spots of the park.

PHOTO: Navigating the Arrayanes River

PHOTO: Another view of the Arrayanes (Myrtle) River

This river receives the waters of lakes Verde and Menéndez, but forms part of a system of 13 lakes, the waters of which end at River Futaleufú or Grande (Great River).

PHOTO: Lake Verde

During the walk from Lake Verde to Lake Menendez we enjoy seeing beautiful flowers on the road:

PHOTO

But we have not seen the best yet. During the navigation of lake Menendez we pass in front of the Torrecillas glacier, where the motorboats stop so that you may film it.

PHOTO: Navigating lake Menéndez, the glacier may be seen at a distance (center of the photo)

The day is getting cloudy (this is one of the most rainy areas of the country) but we still enjoy the scenery.

PHOTO: The Torrecillas Glacier.

After disembarking from the motorboat, we start an incredible walk in beautiful primitive scenarios. The path is nearly closed by the vegetation and sometimes you have to walk under a fallen tree.

PHOTO: During the walk we see some giant coigues. This one is some 800 years old.

PHOTO: Path towards lake Cisne

After a forty minute walk we reach beautiful lake Cisne (see two next photos) .

PHOT: Lake Cisne

From here onwards we border the Cisne river towards lake Menendez, more than half a mile of waterfalls and rapids. The view is really impressive.

PHOTO: A walterfall on the Cisne River. The vegetation did not allow a better photo.

PHOTO: The path is very narrow, allowing the passage of only one person at a time, while we hear the rapids roaring.

PHOTO: Cisne River downstream from the rapids.

Before we board the motorboat, we pass in front of a 2600 year old larch (alerce) This tree belongs to the same family as the Sequoias.

PHOTO: An alerce (larch) 2,600 years old. There is another one in the intangible part of the park that is said to be five thousand years old.

Before boarding the motorboat, we take another photo of lake Menendez. We really enjoy having seen so much beauty.

PHOTO.

Althouth the tour is expensive (some 37 dollars) we will never regret having come to this beautiful spot of Argentina. The Los Alerces National Park (250 miles south of Bariloche) is a place worthwhile visiting.
