Sightseeing in Buenos Aires requires the same care you would have in any large city: do not change money on the street, do not show your cameras or camcorders while you are not using them, avoid solitary areas and do not be on the street late at night. Also avoiding the marginally poor areas, which in any case are far away from the downtown, and staying away from the railway station areas. But if you take these minimum precautions, you should not have any problem. And if you decide to come to Argentina to take advantage of this real bargain for tourists, there are two Powwows you will want to be at: Mid-December in Buenos Aires, and mid-November in Mar del Plata (seaside resort). Go to the Powwow page and have a look.

I wish I could download the film I took this morning, and put it here, but I have no idea how to do it. Now I am going to look up the internet and see if I can find some nice photo to give you an idea of what I saw a couple of hours ago. Sorry, I have not found any sunrise photos yet, but here are some views of Puerto Madryn. You will see whales, penguins, cormorans and many other beauties. Península Valdez is very near here. Here is the link to the Department of Tourism of Tierra del Fuego, with the price of the different hotels, their phones and E-mails. As you will see, although some hotels charge more than 200 Dollars per night, others have far lower rates. Where you read U$D it means US Dollars. If it only says $ (Argentine pesos), divide the rate by 2.80 to have the value in Dollars. http://www.tierradelfuego.org.ar/alojamientos/ushuaia/hoteles.htm#1 A Mexican friend that went recently down there, said: The views of Ushuaia seem to be taken from a fairy tale... It is really magnificent. If you can afford it, take the chance. And if you need an economic alternative, Hostelling International only charges some 5 Dollars per night and per bed in a 6 bed room, with private lockers. Buses to Ushuaia are not expensive, but the trip takes well over 48 hours. For instance, the bus from Mar del Plata to Río Gallegos (42 hours) costs only 40 US Dollars. A stop-over at Puerto Madryn (about half way) is therefore recommended. At Puerto Madryn you will have substantially lower costs, and the chance to see guanacos (a kind of llama), whales, seals, penguins, orcas and dolphins, depending on the season of the year. To the best of my knowledge, Andesmar is the only company that has sleeping coaches, something like business class on international flights. These are their buses, but you must ask for the Servicio de Primera Clase (First Class Service). It you prefer to use standard buses due to their cost, I would prefer some other company, as El Condor. I travelled on a standard bus of Andesmar recently and it is not the best in that area. http://www.andesmar.com/1Clase.htm And these are their timetables. You have to change bus in Caleta Olivia, near Comodoro Rivadavia. (Retiro-Caleta Olivia and then Caleta Olivia-Río Gallegos) from there one (some 6 hours more or less) take any bus company that may be available. But from Río Gallegos you can also go to El Calafate, to see the glaciers. It is only 5 hours by bus from Rio Gallegos to El Calafate. http://www.andesmar.com/servis.htm If you need hotel reservations at El Calafate, clic on this link. They belong to Hostelling International, but also have rooms with private bathroom: www.glaciar.com Even if you don´t intend to go, clic on the link to see the photo. It will impress you. Here you have a travel agency that does not charge more to foreigners, IF you travel by bus. One caution however, where it says "habitación a compartir" it means Hostelling International (room for 6 passengers, with locker and safe, but sharing the room with another 5 persons). Where it says "base doble" it means double occupancy in an hotel. Their air fares semm to be very low, but could be higher for foreigners. Just have a look, and check their rates before travelling: www.asatej.com Have a nice trip. Robert Ingledew [Edited at 2003-11-22 16:05]
