It might be well worth looking into the cabinets for envelopes an piggy banks of old holiday money from all over Europe from trips you, your parents or grandparents made in the 70'ties or 80'ties... While crisp brand new ones might be worth up to 150-200 euros to collectors, used and folded bills can still be handed in at the Nederlandse Bank for 45 euro and 38 cents....

There are still 3.2 million 100 bills missing (ka-ching!) of this type and the other types, so if you have them, you might be sitting an a small fortune...

I bet a lot of people are sitting on one or two for keepsakes. I know I still have some bills and coins from my trips around pre-euro Europe. I'm not going to turn in my 20 DM bill just for 10€ (or less). I mean, if I had 30 of them sitting around then maybe I would turn in 29, but I bet a lot of people are keeping just one or two bills and a couple coins.
With almost 17 million Dutch, I think 3.2 million missing bills is not too remarkable.

The expiration date of coins from the Netherlands has expired, so only silver and gold coins are still worth something...

Perhaps some charity or relief fund still collects them, like the operation Pieces Jaunes (yellow (copper) coins) for France... (although there seems to be talk of fraud)

It turns up now and then Jul 21, 2016

My husband once found 600 deutschmarks tucked into an old book he'd bought for 50 cents at the recycling center in Munich. We had to go to the central Bavarian bank headquarters to exchange it, and brought along all the coins that had turned up since the change to the euro. We were very surprised to find people ahead of us in line, doing exactly the same thing.

Ok, for 600 DMs I'd go get them exchanged, too! But I'm still holding on to my 20 DM bill
