question for staff concerning removal of outsourcer May 10, 2012

I believe I have found an open support request from you on the matter, correct? Let me have a look and make sure this gets looked into.

Jared

I just wanted to ask again why the outsourcer I am referring to in this thread was removed from the Blue Board in the first place.

I appreciate that you acted swiftly and put the outsourcer back on Blue Board but there are possibly other cases because, as is evident through my comments earlier, I was indeed initially told by staff that the outsourcer's BB page was hidden for the following reason (which can, as you later clarified, not be used to justify such removal):

Quote from my support request:

"Please note that as Blue Board rules state http://www.proz.com/siterules/blue_board_bb_blueboard/10#10 , Blue Board records remain in place for at least six months following any form of outsourcing activity. The outsourcer http://www.proz.com/blueboard.php/XXXX did not have outsourcer activity on ProZ.com from 200X that is why the Blue Board record has been hidden. However, the company has been blocked by ProZ.com to prevent further activity on ProZ.com."

End of quote

My question is: what caused the removal of the outsourcer in question. I think this situation should lead to a search for similar cases.
I understand that somebody can make a mistake but there had to have been a reason why removal was initiated at all. I don't believe that the page simply disappeared as in a glitch.

Thanks for elaborating.
Bernhard

then what's the point of the BB?

Hi Cetacea,

I should have probably phrased it as "automatically think that because somebody has a consistent rating of "5" on the Blue Board means they'll pay a good price for professional work."

I don't want to say that there can't be any outsourcers with a consistent "5" rating who pay a good price for professional work but through my own experience, this is hardly ever the case and one should be very careful and not assume it.

And yes, comments on BB will assist translators in assessing the outsourcer correctly. I find it important to be able to post and read ratings and comments, especially if the experience/entry was/is negative.

I do believe the BB has merit to many translators.

Each company runs its business in the way it wants to.
Proz doesn't have to justify itself.
We are not shareholders but members.
Splitting hairs, sometimes.

And this thread is trolling a bit.

I appreciate the answers given above. Thanks.

Removal of BB pages of negatively as well as positively rated outsourcers plus wrong information given by staff as justifiable reason for it doesn't seem like splitting hairs to me.

And yes, I believe there should be justification for such actions. There is a "relationship" between Proz.com and its users.
How would you like it if your comments together with all other comments and ratings for an outsourcer and that outsourcer's BB page(s) were removed or hidden when that outsourcer never paid you or paid you unacceptably late, not to mention all the other disappointed translators involved ?

Trolling? I believe there is some valuable information here for translators who want to learn about the Blue Board and what to make of it.

I beg to differ. ProZ is a business but also portrays itself as a community, or at least it did so in the past. And at any rate a large part of what ProZ offers is community input, e.g. the forums and, yes, the BB ratings.

Frankly, I don't see any trolling. Ensuring consistent handling of the BB is important, and this is what the discussion is all about ... and forums are supposed to be for discussion purposes, so ...

(I have recently experienced a case of an agency with a double entry, i.e. registered under two different names but some contact details, such as the web address containingg the new company name and the fax No., are identical -- one of the corresponding BB records is impeccable, the other one rather catastrophic. So there are some issues here.)

Agree with Bernhard and Opolt May 10, 2012

I think that the concern expressed by Bernhard was entirely legitimate. More to the point, the fact that a staff representative has taken the trouble to respond to said concern indicates that he himself implicitly acknowledges the importance of the matter.
