I am still slightly amazed at the lack of interest/distain for MT in the translator community. As discussed in this forum there is basically no "philosophical" difference between MT and CAT tools. They both use algorithms to generate translations and in my opinion well-programmed MT tools give much better translations than most "fuzzy" matches. This week however since Google has stopped Trados users (among others) from using Google Translate many translators have confessed to using MT and quite a few seem desperate to get GT capability back!
The one think that was nice about the Trados-GT combination was the seamless integration - just a tick in a box to get it working and the possibility of choosing each time between the fuzzy match and automatic translation shown in the same window.
Personally I have always used a Systran desktop "toolbar" system. This is a bit cumbersome as you have to translate segment by segment. I have little time for fiddling around with computer programs and would be very grateful if anyone can tell me how to seamlessly integrate the Systran package in any CAT tool if possible with a Trados-like window of the two possible translations (and why not with a place in future for the GT translation as well).
Also, there don't seem to be many Systran users on this forum, but I would also be very grateful to have an assessment of the new Systran 7 - is it worth the 400 Euro update from version 6

The GT API was extremely helpful in Studio and by far the most superior MT solution I have come across so far. SDL's MT solutions are pretty much useless.
So I guess it's back to square one.

Systran = GT but after years of building up personal dictionaries Oct 15, 2011

Hi Lutz - After years of building up giant personal dictionaries I have managed to get Systran to produce translations that are as good if not better than GT in several specialist areas. This solution has the advantage of complete confidentiality as all the processing takes place on my computer and not in the cloud!
However I can't find a CAT system that seamlessly integrates Systran. Certainly Trados doesn't and nor does Across. WF is meant to but I have never managed to get it to work.

Perhaps a group of translators working in the same field could collaborate to build up a good MT system.

Using Systran in Studio Oct 15, 2011

Hi,

If you have a corporate Systran server, or if you use the online services and have login details then you can use the Systran plugin for Studio 2009. It's available here:

SYSTRAN for SDL Trados Studio : http://tinyurl.com/systran-plugin

This will give you a similar level of integration as Google did.

We have not received an updated version for 2011 yet but I imagine something may be in the pipeline.

Post edit: Just reviewing the comments after I sent this I note that someone said Systran no longer provide the online services. I don't know the accuracy of this statement but if you have an account of your own then perhaps it will be possible to configure this plugin to work with that?

Regards

Paul

A step in the right direction Oct 15, 2011

Thanks Paul
This may be a step towards what I'm looking for though as I said above I use Systran Premium desktop solution.
The server system is useless as Systran only provides a good translation after years of preparing user dictionaries adapted to each very specialised subject.
Perhaps I should ask Systran to see if I can get a corporate server set up for a one man band. Otherwise there may be a way a group of translators using Systran could set up their own server. For medi

For medical translators the confidentiality issue is very important and rules out using GT for most jobs.

Systran Support Oct 15, 2011

Hi,

I think asking Systran is the best way forward. There are contact details on the OpenExchange page for the app... under the Support tab. Let us know if this works for you... would be interesting to hear the feedback.

Regards

Paul

A suggestion for all CAT tool providers Oct 15, 2011

A suggestion for all CAT tool providers: allow translators to indicate the path resp. the URL of the MT system they want to use.
