I have been in contact with a literary magazine at a university that publishes literary translations online. They have expressed an interest in my work.

The text that I would like to translate is an excerpt from a piece of literature, which was the subject of my undergraduate thesis, that is more than five-hundred years old and was written in Spain. The author's name is unknown. There are many English-language versions of the entire text.

Would publication of the excerpt violate any copyright rules in the United States?

Hi. I don't think so, Nov 30, 2013

unless you copied some sentences or excerpts from the previous translations, and they would want to go after you, and especially were able prove it.

If you provide an entirely new translation of the book excerpt, and possibly even do some research in regards to translations of the excerpt you intend to translate, just to ensure that you are not copying anyone's work, then there is or most likely shouldn't be any copyright infringement at hand.

Please excuse my ignorance if this question seems to have an obvious answer.

Ignorance only exists in those who never ask questions....
