See http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,3605,1300879,00.html for an interesting exchange of e-mails between a British writer and the Russian translator of one of her books. It certainly made her think about translation, and about what can and cannot be translated. In response to his queries, she explained the significance of many words and phrases used in the UK. He in turn sent interesting information about life, literature and book publishing in Russia.

This was published in the Guardian Weekend on Saturday.

Correct link? Sep 13, 2004

This sounds really interesting, but unfortunately an error seems to occur when I click on the link. Are you sure this is the correct link?

Thanks,

Sarah

Thank you very much for the advice about the link, Nora. It has to have all those numbers on the end. Copy and paste - it works, I tried it just now.

Usual thing. IMHO, a translator should consult with an author while translating (if possible, of course). I met lots of problems when working on Rudy Ruker's story. And I grateful to the author for helping me to make things clear.

Thanks for the link! Oct 15, 2004

Hi, Dylan, and thanks for the link!

It turned out to be a very pleasant and amusing reading material. Sparked off [even more] my interest about getting into the literary translation field...

Cheers!!
