Hello everybody:

My name is Gala Arias and I'm a translator from Spain. I am now working in my PdH degree and I have to find out the origin of this quotation from Umberto Eco:

Translation is the art of failure

Can you inform me about the name of the book where it appears? Do you know how is it in english?

Many thanks in advance. ¡Gracias por todo!

Un saludo,

Gala.

Dire quasi la stessa cosa Sep 1, 2009

The sentence is taken from the book "Dire quasi la stessa cosa. Esperienze di traduzione" (2003). It has been translated into Spanish (Decir casi lo mismo)

In the following link you will find some reference:
http://www.umbertoeco.it/CV/BOOKS.htm

Hope this helps!

Translation is the art of failure Sep 1, 2009

This sentence in Italian would be like:

"La traduzione è l'arte del fallire"

I'm sorry but I don't have Eco's book at disposal right now, so I cannot find the original sentence.

Glad to help you out

L'arte del compromesso Sep 11, 2009

As far as I can remember, the sentence in the book is "La traduzione è lì'arte del compromesso" (unfortunately, the book wasn't mine and I dont'have it anymore).

I'm not sure, but the sentence you mention comes from some article, rather than from a book.
