I have been reading French literature for a long time and have recently started reading Spanish literature too. I have noticed that a lot of it has never been translated into English. If I did a translation of a short story:
(1) Who could help me deal with the author regarding copyright?
(2) Who might be interested in publishing it for me?
(3) How much might I earn?
(4) What other problems might I have?

1. You're on your own.
2. Almost nobody.
3. With time, enough to recoup the cost of mailing typescripts to quarterlies and publishers (but not the cost of ink cartridges and paper).
4. Bitterness. High blood pressure. Insomnia.
