I also publicly admit my ignorance... I had never heard of the winner ***blush***

Regarding Vargas Llosa, I agree with what's been said here, which is why I said "rightish" instead of "rightist"

Of course in France "Le Clézio" is quite famous, but I must admit that I have never read a single book...

Maybe I'll try and find out who that is.

And everybody else who had never heard of him either... You made me feel a little bit less ignorant, lol

I read one, long ago, as every one was reading it... I did not like it. I must be a bad reader.

Same thread Oct 14, 2008

I tried to read several of his books, but I never could finish any.

It always begins very well, because he is a sort of travel writer, you are taken "overseas", you are out of your own civilization.

Then, after a few pages, you begin to wonder if the story is really interesting, and if the style really had to be so dry.

Imho, great subjects, not a great writer. Not for style anyway.

An excellent explanation of the winner and his work Oct 18, 2008

Prof. Lisa Jardine gave an excellent talk about him on BBC Radio. Here's a full transcript of what she said:

On that page there's also a link to the audio version, so you listen to her as well !
