Does any one know if this book has been translated into English? In my Internet searches, I only come up with French translations. The book I'm translating from French to English has a quote (in French) from this book.
If at all possible, I'd like to use the published English version (if one exists).

TIA
Mara

CACAO

Published in 1933, Cocoa was the second novel by Jorge Amado. Back then, the Bahian writer was a young man on his 20 to 21 years of age, obsessed with the idea of telling the story of the lives of cocoa farm workers in the south of Bahia, their difficulties, their suffering and the oppression of which they were victims. Jorge Amado’s love for egalitarianism of communism and for its manifestation in art – realism and socialist was on fashion at that time – becomes evident in the question that he asks in his introductory note about his own book: “will this be a proletarian novel? ”The art of Jorge Amado is here now in a maturing phase. The writer confesses his desire to tell the story of the lives of workers in this book “with the minimum of literature and the maxim of honesty”. This means an engagement that, if it should not allow the text a total naturality, it shows a great emotion, a deep aspiration for social justice, a genuine desire to fight in the defense of the oppressed ones. In that regard, Cocoa is a voluntary, involving, touching novel that forestalls subjects that were retaken in a magical form in The Violent Land almost one decade later. It is, in one way, also, a formidable picture of the artist as a young man.

The book was recently translated into English by Cesar Augusto but it has not yet been published.

TOPIC STARTER
thank you Aug 20, 2008

That is indeed helpful.
In another forum, someone suggested searching the Index Translationum (a Unesco database found online) and nothing turned up.
Since the English version hasn't been published yet, I can safely go ahead and translate the quote myself.
Thanks again, Susana!
