Hi, how do you start doing transcriptions? What hardware, software do you need? When can you start offering your services to an agency? Are there any classes? Sorry if this has been already asked.

Maybe José Henrique's link defines it already, but I just wanted to be clear about what you see as "transcription". Wikipedia (not always the best reference but it'll do here) says:

"Transcription in the linguistic sense is the systematic representation of language in written form. The source can either be utterances (speech or sign language) or preexisting text in another writing system, although some linguists consider only the former to be transcription.

Transcription should not be confused with translation, which means representing the meaning of a source language text in a target language (e.g. translating the meaning of an English text into Spanish), or with transliteration which means representing a text from one script in another (e.g. transliterating a Cyrillic text into the Latin script)."

In other words, transcription DOES NOT include translation. And don't let any client tell you the two can be done in one audio-to-text file conversion process, in very little more time than it took the speaker to say the source words. Transcription alone can easily take 5-10 minutes per audio/video minute i.e. an hour's speech can take a day to transcribe. Then you can start translating it.
