Dear colleagues,

Audio Transcription is to certain extent a new sphere for me. At the moment I’m trying to elaborate my rates for this kind of services.

I would like to know the minimal (starting) rates (preferably in US$) in audio transcription from all over the world. You can simply enter your rate and time in the reply (but comments will also be highly appreciated).

It is given (imaginable ideal conditions):

Language: Transcriber’s native one (we don’t speak now about translation)
Recording Quality: Very good, everything is quite audible
Recording Format: Digital
Topic: General (not very specific or technical)
Voices: Only one native speaker with clear articulation, everything said should be transcribed
Speech Tempo: Moderate

The questions are:

1) How long on average would it take you to transcribe 1 minute of a described recording?

2) What would be your MINIMAL (starting) charge for transcription of 1 minute of a described recording?

I would also appreciate links to good (preferably free) software for audio recording and transcription; useful websites dedicated to Audio Transcription, etc.

Thank you in advance for your help and support.

Regards,
Nikita Kobrin

Method of Calculation Dec 14, 2003

Hello Nikita,

it takes me about 1 hour to transcribe 10 minutes (of a tape), so I charge as follows:

Length of tape x 6 x hourly rate

Example: If I have to transcribe a two-hour tape, I charge my hourly rate x 12.

HTH,
Patricia

Hi Nikita,

Below is what I ask of my direct clients on transcription-only assignments:

Delivery: e-mail or postal on cd-rom or cassette
Recording format: as mp3 or wav (segmented)
Recording Quality: preferrably any noise has already been filtered out, high treble, low bass
Voices: One or more speakers, everything said should be transcribed...client specific, so the client has to provide an example.
Tempo: does not matter.

My rates:
* 1 minute of audio would take me approximately 2 minutes to transcribe.
* Minimal charge 2,00 EUR per minute.
* Minimal charge per assignment 20,00 EUR
* Extra charge for additional requirements on layout, font types etc.
* Extra fee for returning the transcription as a hard copy

Hope this helps.
Bye,
Bianca
