I hope this does not sound too harsh, but in my opinion you are a bit late if you mean that you are sitting the exam this January (i.e. in a few days) and have not done any serious preparation yet. I'd say that it takes at the very least a good dozen of practice translations reviewed by some other very experienced, certified person and several months, even if you have a lot of experience as a translator.

If you mean that you are taking the exam next year (2011), you might want to check the London City University as they have some very nice courses in preparation for the DipTrans.

Now, from the real exams (from previous years) I have seen in my course with the City University in preparation for the exams, I can tell you that a majority of texts are newspaper or magazine articles from different titles and about different topics. Even semi-specialised texts look to me like journalist work, so editorial contents in the topics you expect to take in the exam might prove to be a good bet at this stage.

I would also recommend to look for some other experienced translator in your language pairs who has passed the exam already and can mark and comment on your translations for a fee. That will also help you better grasp what is expected in this exam.

Good luck!
(I am taking the exam this January).

That certainly changes the picture! :-) Jan 7, 2010

Hi Solange. I am glad to hear that.

Hm... Honestly given the cost of sitting the exam I would explore your options with the DipTrans courses with the City University. The cost is not too high for what you receive in exchange, in my opinion. I only did the final course, but you might want to use your time to do more parts as additional training. Do tell us what you decide and how it goes. It will always be interesting reading.

Take care!

I can send you papers Jan 8, 2010

Hi Solange,

I'm sitting the exam on the 21st and have been practicing with past papers. I take it you have found the papers that are available on the IoL website? Just do them all, it doesn't hurt to do different subjects.
I did the course at London City University two years ago and thought it was very helpful. But I only passed one paper.

Hi Solange,

I did the course at London City University two years ago and thought it was very helpful. But I only passed one paper.
This time, I have also studied theory of translating. Very interesting and I am convinced it is making a difference in my translations.
- Introducing Translation Studies, theories and applications, Jeremy Munday, Routledge
- Editing and revising for translators, Brian Mossop, St Jerome Publishing
- In other Words, a coursebook on translation, Mona Baker, Routledge

Let me know if you want the papers, I can e-mail them to you. There will be a (very) small fee as I had to pay for them myself!

Letter of credit Jan 8, 2010

Hello Laura,
Looking at this matter of the IOL's Letter of credit for the paper you did pass, I am wondering: is passing one paper enough to use this as a credential in your Proz.com profile?

Shouldn't the credential area be reserved for the full diploma? I see a risk that by stating that you have the credential, potential customers could be confused and assume that you have the full Diploma, which in a competitive situation would not be fair to those who report the credential as having the full Diploma. What do you reckon?

Thank you for the references books recommendations, will definitely look at them. How much you charge for the papers?? are they from your preparations course at City University? I have printed the samples from the Iol web sites.

Thanks a lot

Are you sure this reselling of the papers is authorised by IOL or the City University? I would recommend you to reconsider it, and instead recommend Solange to buy these materials lawfully from the IOL, just to avoid legal issues here.

Well, I have to say that I agree with Tomás, that Laura's profile certainly does give the misleading impression that she has the full Diploma.

I did one module of the City University course last year and found it was enough to see what was required in the exams. The past papers were of course very useful. I did pass all three exams, by the way. I assume that anyone using the DipTrans label has the same full qualification.
