I have just created a blog for myself, in which I plan to present cultural and linguistic snippets and discuss translation-related issues as well as some social news. Just one thing, I would like to add some photos or videos to my blog - could anyone explain how to do this?

Also, I have been informed that I can only download or copy photos I am authorised to use. How can I tell if I am authorised to use a particular photo, and, if not, how could I go about asking for authorisation?

Also, I have been informed that I can only download or copy photos I am authorised to use. How can I tell if I am authorised to use a particular photo, and, if not, how could I go about asking for authorisation? Who would I have to contact (site owner, photograph taker or someone else)?

My proposed photographs and videos (apart from photos of my own) would come from three main sources:

1. Photos available from sites on the Internet;

2. Photos available in the image database accessible through Google;

3. YouTube videos.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

How to add photos or videos will depend on your blog platform (Blogger, WordPress, LiveJournal etc), so you'd best search the Help documentation for a specific guide. The process is quite easy in all, though, so don't worry.

Now, getting permission to use images is a bit trickier. My personal suggestion would be to use the Creative Commons search engine aggregator (http://search.creativecommons.org ) to find images (and video) licensed under CC. A quick primer on the type of reuse allowed by each license is available at http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses. And in case you don't know about CC at all, that's a good place to start as well!

Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page ) is a huge repository of freely usable files (nearly 6 million) and has the added advantage of strictly allowing files that are in the public domain or can be used and modified, even for commercial purposes, without the need for prior permission. It is included in the CC search engine, but is quite easy to search directly if you'd like to expand your options to include public domain content and content provided under other free licenses. This is arguably the easiest way to obtain images that can be reused and reproduced without having to request permission; a guide is available at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Reusing_content_outside_Wikimedia .

If you'd really like to go down roads (1) and (2), though, you should indeed obtain permission before reusing content on your website. The easiest way is to find who was responsible for creating the content; this will often (but not always) be the webmaster of the site. If the webpage gives explicit image credit, you can also try contacting the photographer/creator directly. A personal message will often obtain the best results for such requests, but if you'd like a boilerplate message, one is available from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requesting_copyright_permission#Typical_request_letter_for_confirmation ) and can be used with only minor modifications. Wikipedia often runs into the issue of having to request permission to use external images, as it generally forbids the use of content not licensed under the CC-BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike) license or in the public domain.

As for (3), embedding YouTube videos is very, very easy: as easy as copying a predefined code that is available for most videos and pasting it into your blog post. A quick guide is available from Google: http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=57788 . This is standard practice in the blogosphere, and you don't have to worry about prior permission in this case.

Best of luck
