I have been thinking a lot lately about forming or joining a translation team and there are many things which I would like to learn more about. It would be wonderful to get some input and ideas from those of you who have tried it and who hopefully is still cooperating with colleagues in this way...

I would like to hear from people who have experience from working in teams, preferably here on Proz, but also in general.

Do you market yourself actively or do you just contact each other as a back-up or when you get asked to translate in the opposite language-direction?

If the team is spread out in different countries, how do you deal with high transaction costs?

How do you deal with the fluctuating different currencies? Do you have general pricelists in the major currencies or how do you solve the problem of changing value of currencies within the team, especially if the client perhaps pays in a third currency?

How did you meet as a team?

Did you get many jobs from each other or did you mainly use it for back-up so that you never have to decline jobs?

Did you meet the other team members in person or work with them a long time prior to forming the team?

In your experience what was most fruitful, to have a team with people specialised in the same thing and the same language-direction, for back-up reasons, or to compensate each other with different language-directions or specialities?

Is there mainly one person who finds the jobs and does that person then get a percentage, or is it more a mutual trade of jobs?

In your experience, is it better to have a small group where everyone knows each other or is it preferable to have a large group where you are bound to find someone available who specialises in what you need at the moment?
