Dear all,

Does anyone know of any translation companies that are located in the Washington D.C. / Virginia / Maryland area? I have tried the translation companies directory, but the closest you can drill down geographically is by country (6500 firms for the USA!), and putting the above in as keywords returns nothing.

Many thanks for your help,
Mark Smith

What are you exactly looking for? Sep 24, 2009

Hi Mark,
The Yellow Pages website can give you lots of addresses / contact information, see this as an example http://tinyurl.com/y985orm
Another possibility would be to search through the ATA website: https://www.atanet.org/onlinedirectories/companies.php

Tried Google Maps? Sep 24, 2009

Go to Google Maps, zoom the area you are interested in, and then write "translation company" / "translations" / "translation service" or similar terms in the box. Voila! It might be too generic, but you can of course zoom cities or smaller areas for a new search.

Thank you Sep 24, 2009

Thanks, those are both good ideas. I'm searching for German/French to English in-house posts.

Not to contradict you, Luisa - rather to help Mark make choices: be sure that you will not become the nice girl/boy in some export-to-Europe department who will "also be in charge of translations". It happened to me so be aware that this is always an option for the employer.

Also in charge of sweeping the floors and washing the windows Sep 25, 2009

That is entirely up to his regard for his profession, his ethics and his dignity. And up to his savvyness, of course. It has nothing to do with being a translator. It happens in any position. Many employers will try to add the usual closing sentence to the job description: "And any other task assigned". It is up to employees to refuse to sweep the floors and serve coffee.

Hi Mark,
Try contacting ASET: http://www.asetquality.com/index.html
and Comprehensive Language Center: http://www.comprehensivelc.com/
Both are located in Arlington, VA and have contracts with federal government agencies and local government agencies, which means they haven't been as hard hit by the economic crisis and might be looking for freelancers in your language pairs. I've worked with both, never had a problem.
Best of luck! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly.

More ways to search Oct 3, 2009

Also, I just tried searching through the Blue Board and I got the idea of writing in "Virginia" in the keyword field and... voilá, I believe the agencies listed are all in Virginia, so that might be another useful way of searching by state. Don't take my word for it, though, try it out yourself. If you're a full paying member of ProZ I believe you can conduct as many searches as you want on the BlueBoard. If this is not the case, someone else will probably correct me.
Cheers!
