One might add several of the languages of Central Asia and Africa to the \"list of languages of interest\" due to events of 9/11 and subsequent worldwide activities pursuant to Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

A related complication - mentioned lightly in this NYT piece - for governments (US and others) in finding bilinguals in those language skills is the cumbersome process for getting potential employees investigated and adjudicated for government security clearances in time to work with what is often \"time-sensitive\" information in such languages.

(That situation is a significant \'self-inflicted wound,\' since the minimum processing time in the US Government has been six months from the date the candidate submits paperwork and undergoes a \'subject interview.\")

Spanish and French will continue to be significant languages, although more probably in commercial, industrial, technological and academic areas, rather than the governmental sector.

HTH.
