I'd like to measure my performance in this program, so I tried to find some feature counting translated words, but all I've found is Tools > Analyse that's not brilliant and somewhat confusing for me (I'm beginner in this application)

Does anybody knows how to count words by selecting particular segments (f.ex. from 1234 to 3456)?

Thx in advance

Hi YaniQC,

Tools > Wordcount (right above Analyze).
Or simply Ctrl+W.

As for the separate segments, I really don't know, maybe sb else does.

workaround solution Sep 19, 2007

If you want to count the words in a consecutive range of segments, here is a workaround solution:

1. Select the segments. You can do this by opening your file(s) in DVX, pressing Shift, then pulling down the mouse / pressing the Down arrow.

2. Open the context menu by right-clicking in the selected area.

3. Mark all selected segments as Pending (you can also do this by Ctrl+Shift+P)

4. Export an external view. To do this, go to File - Export - External view. Select the path where you want to save your file. In the "Selection" section, make sure to select "Only pending rows".

5. After the exporting is done, open the external view file from its location.

6. Delete any unwanted text, and keep only the first column (source text).

7. Use a regular word count in Word.

good luck,
Csaba

I have already several pending rows in the segments I'd like to count.

If I'm not mistaken, you can't undo status changes, you can just change it once more.

It'll be difficult to remember which rows are really pending and which are not.

Also, I've already tried to use Export function and I had a huge RTF file with the table where I had source text, target text and target status. Furthermore, all codes were there.

I could have deleted columns of no interest and transform the rest in plain text, but the codes mess up everything.

Shortcut to the Workaround :) Sep 19, 2007

1. Select all relevant segment (as Csaba explained)
2. Press Shift-Ctrl-K (this will lock all segments(
3. Do word count (Ctrl-W)
4. The word count is in the third row - under the heading "Locked".
5. Shift-Ctrl-K again to unlock.

Done.

Locked Sep 20, 2007

Yesterday I tried to do smth like this and locked all the segments, but, when I unlocked them, I lost all the status data. Some of the segments had been pending, some had been finished, some had had no status. After I unlocked them, they had no status at all. It took me half an hour to re-read all these segments and to restore all the statuses.

Is there a way to count words without changing their status?

Two options - copy the project file and do the counting in the copy . Or export the text with the options "Include row status->As number" selected, do the counting as above and re-import your text. The import window will come up empty, but clicking "OK" will re-import the status.

Performance measuring, II Sep 21, 2007

If you're interested in measuring your performance, here's another easy option:

1. Start on a full hour
2. count empty words (Ctrl-W -> Alt-C, look up "Empty") and note the value..
3. Work for 60 minutes.
4. Repeat step 2.
5. Substract 2-4.
