Does anyone know how variables get displayed for translators in DV.
I'm seeing blank spaces where the placeholder should be

I am not sure I understand your question. Are you looking for AutoSearch boxes or you do not get any suggestions from previous translation?
Please check whether you have set your memories (Project-Properties-Databases).

When I open a file that contains variable pleaceholders, the placeholder doesn't appear

For example:
"Please select the placeholder123 menu option"

where placeholder123 = company name "ACME"

When I open this in DV I see
"Please select the menu option"

The placeholder for the variable disappears

Any ideas ?

In DV the translator doesn't know that there is supposed to be a variable there

Embedded codes Aug 5, 2009


In Trados placeholder123 displays but is externalised so the translator knows this is a variable.


Normally, so shoud DVX, as an "embedded code", like {342}. Could it be you have "Hide embedded codes" activated? You can find that under Tools - Options - Enironment, 4th option from the bottom.

If this does not solve it, let me ask you how the placeholder looks like in the source file? What format does the source file have anyway? Maybe you could then replace the placeholder by something better recognizable and change it back to the original placeholder after translation.
