Off topic: 2 characters on an old scroll

I bought a scroll on Ebay which seller pretend to be 290 years old. After asking him to show me from where result the age I received an apology that a mate listed wrong the items and it is from times of Guangxu Emperor (1875-1908) of Qing Dinasty.
I said OK, only who isn`t working don`t make mistakes but asked to be shown where the date of painting is marked. I had send him this image (which I found was used on porcelains from that time) <... See more

As I have doubts about match but having no knowledge in Chinese language I kindly ask if any colleagues from here on Proz may enlight me.

It does look like 光緒 (Guangxu), though that alone is not the year, which also includes the next 2 characters (the year number). I can’t exactly read the third character, but assuming that it is indeed 光緒, the year looks like 光緒丁未, which would be 1907 according to http://www.hsinchu.gov.tw/landweb/online/japen/default.asp

... or "fake", in plain English.

An authentic Qing-dynasty scroll would definitely not sell for €11 and change. It would be more in the multi-thousand-Euro range.

So in the final analysis, it really doesn't matter whether they claim it to be 100 years old or 290 years old. Artifacts like this one are produced by present-day art studios, mainly for export.
