太对了，总有一批翻译有钱就捞，跟刚下海似的。并且他们的特点是另有主要稳定经济来源，做翻译挣小费甚至作为充实闲散无聊生活的一种方式...

其实我发现有不少人就是先用 Google 翻译，再稍加修改就交差，然后翻译社再找人去审核。这里许多翻译社的 PM 不懂中文，即使遇到谁把“有困难，找警察”翻译成“Difficult to find the police”，他也不知道。等到校稿者审核时，问题才暴露。

到这里来扔上几个铜板然后让大家抢的“善人”还真不少。这只是一个较极端的例子，但很有代表性。

你的优势是你的专业。你应继续结合你的专业做医药生物方面的翻译。建议你到 ATA 网站上的 Directory of Language Services Companies 寻找符合你专业的翻译公司，然后逐一发信并附上简历。当然，也许一时不会有回音，但早晚会有的。最好是加入 ATA，因为翻译公司往往也会到 ATA 的 Directory of Translation and Interpreting Services 寻找翻译，尤其是具有特殊专业背景的翻译。

如果有翻译公司与你联系，先通过 ProZ 的 Blue Board 及其它途径查其信誉。在对其底细不了解的情况下，不要轻易接项目。宁可不干也不能白干。此外，如果你愿意，还可到当地医院做口译。美国法律规定医院应出钱为不懂英语的病人提供翻译。
尽管你家有位好“领导”，但我认为你应以做翻译为权宜之计。等孩子三岁左右时把他/她送幼儿园，你自己趁年轻时再找份专业工作。如果热爱翻译工作，可以等退休后再来做。以上仅供参考。

我可不这么认为。有主要稳定经济来源的人，不至于去抢那 $0.60 的铜板吧？我认为他们是饥不择食。有大批这样的人存在，还有大批把“有困难，找警察”翻译成“Difficult to find the police” 的人存在，翻译行业的前景可想而知。
当然，有些人也许是迫于无奈。例如，某位高材生考上了北大却没钱交学费，你让他咋办？ 真正可气的是到这里来扔俩铜板让大家哄抢的“大善人”，而不是那些迫于无奈而去抢铜板的人。

说起质量差，不仅只限于外国语。 有的同事连“报到” 和 “报道” 的用法都分不清。 象楼主那样用得对的还是罕见呢。 ...

我个人觉得，兼职翻译还好。但前提是要有一份正当稳定收入的职业做背景。这样做兼职译员所付出的成本就只是空余时间而已，没有其它原材料之类的。我觉得还可以，可能我刚刚入行不久吧。日英的翻译价格还可接受。

And it's not just translation alone. I think the general trend with language usage (at least with the Chinese language) is that not only people can't identify/use the proper words, they can't pronounce it properly, either. In Cantonese there's the linguistic phononmenon (or armageddon if you so prefer, haha) of 懒音 where people simply don't articulate and pronounce words as they should. And with the internet spoonfeeding everyone with information and having stuff like google translator at your fingertips, why bother thinking too much, right?
I am still very green comparing to everyone who's here...and so I am not really aware of how quotes were like back in the day. In my experience of dealing with clients though, quality is still a HUGE issue. I've had direct clients speaking of the difficulty of finding Chinese to English translators (not sure about the English to Chinese side of things). Yes, many are willing to work dirt cheap, but can they offer the quality you might be able to offer? Not likely. Plus as someone mentioned above, you've got field-specific knowledge which is very helpful and is still coveted. Google translator certainly can't provide an exact match for a complicated medical term, so I think you should focus on that as a niche as well.
With that in mind, I try to stay optimistic and think that someday, I can actually live off of this on a full-time basis.
Speaking of which, like OP I am still relatively new to proz.com..if there are any advice for a newbie, it will be much appreciated.
