Isn\'t Glossika a Taiwanese translation agency? I am a Singaporean, I don\'t think there is such an agency in my country.

A good question. Mar 9, 2002

I never heard of this agency before. It is very difficult to verify. I wish someone from this agency can respond at this Forum and tell us his or her side of the story.

I did search it in the ProZ.com under \"Agency rating\", but it is not listed.

I\'m really sorry to hear Yang\'s story on this agency. I\'ve been contacted once, but they dropped the project without notification.

You know Why, Li-Chuan? Mar 10, 2002

Because they do not really have those projects!!! They lie and cheat!

They send me urgent projects(I\'m waiting for their responses, and I promised I will published all the contacts with them in near future) nearly every evening about 6:00pm last week, they have CONSPIRACIES!!!

Just read their Proz Profile, you will understand everything.

There is such a company! Mar 10, 2002

Thank you, Li-chuan. There is such a company. I just visited its website. It is located at HSICHIH, TAIPEI COUNTY, Taiwan. It is not from Singapore like YangJS mentioned in his message. Our Singaporean shcheong is right, it is not from Singapore!

If there is a Glossika in Singapore, then we do not know about it. We are located in Taiwan.

First, I would like to tell Li-chuan that our client decided not to do the project (which we were willing to give her because she\'s very close and had the right qualifications and price). We posted it as a potential project and were trying to get the best price for the client. However, the client did not want to do it because the price was still too high. There\'s nothing we can do

We posted it as a potential project and were trying to get the best price for the client. However, the client did not want to do it because the price was still too high. There\'s nothing we can do about that. They just didn\'t have the budget. I\'m sure all of us have had this situation in this business before. No shocker.

SH Cheong (in Singapore) has worked for us before too.

Second, I must discuss this William Yu-Bing Yang who seems to be using a different name at this site than the one he used with our company. We issued translations to him about a couple weeks ago because he claimed his abilities were so high. But we have our policies that we will not pay for such low quality work. We cannot accept it and it should not be tolerated in this industry.

I can see that he wants to make our agency look bad, and this is obvious because of all his threats in emails to us. I will post for you to judge for yourself the level of his English abilities. I will also post for you the emails exchanged between us. You will understand that we try to maintain professionalism but he did not. This should not be a place to be getting revenge but since he wants to lay the ugly out on the table here, I shall lay out the even uglier side of him.

I offer two translations below. One was the horrible translation that we rejected. The second was the professional one that we had to get redone. Compare for yourself and decide for yourself whether or not we are a professional agency. The was for the Natural Beauty website, a large Chinese company.

5. Although applying poor-quality gas-impermeable skin care products based on animal fats or mineral oils may moisturize the epidermis, these substances block the skin\'s sebaceous and sweat glands, as well as cause constriction of the capillaries. As a result, the blood and lymphatic fluid cannot deeply penetrate into skin structures, so that cells are inactive and the skin then becomes dry and easily irritated. Although switching to Natural Beauty\'s refined skin care products can help, improvement cannot be immediate, as accumulated debris and residues in the skin pores must first be cleared out using Natural Beauty\'s facial mask (once or twice a week). Only after a period of time will the pores become easily penetrated, gradually restoring the skin\'s luster and tone.

William,

I understand how bad you feel about this, but we are native speakers who have written for major publications before and we know quality when we see it. I would suggest to try and maintain professionalism. A person cannot call themselves a translator by just looking up words in a dictionary and writing out what they think is correct. It takes many years of experience and actual use of the language. May I ask what your TOEFL test score is? Your ability wouldn\'t even be high enough to get yourself into an American University--maybe just a university\'s ESL department. I strongly suggest, more study and practice. Take notes of the details written in the previous email to you.

Furthermore, according to our Chinese editors, your Chinese writing abilities are *ok* but still lack professionalism and still required 3 hours of editing work before the document was good enough to send to the client. If you wish to be paid for the assignment, I would suggest using some more deferential vocabulary.

Remember that since we are an agency, we have the right to place you on blacklists with all other translation agencies throughout the Greater China region. As someone attempting to be a professional, try to maintain credibility, stature, reputation, and not let your tongue get the best of you.

I will be passing your notes on to my supervisor to let him handle this from now on. There is a complete record here of our correspondence, and there is nothing wrong with the statements made by me or this agency.

Mike

Subject: UNACCEPTABLE QUALITY

William,

Look, there are many, many problems with your translation. You have not followed our policies very well. First I will discuss the problems from the assignment you handed in this evening:

You completely made up and wrote the address at the top of the page wrong (our policies # 5 and 6)--American addresses can stay in English

The names, terminology, and grammar were written wrong. You misinterpreted English syntax and mixed sentences up. Your financial terminology was all incorrect or unprofessional.

Your Chinese writing is poor, but it\'s worse because you can\'t understand the English. What qualifications do you? It has taken us more than 3 hours to edit your Chinese writing.

Next, the Cosmetic Website file we received from you today:

You did not translate the following:

祅魁

盞絏

祅魁

а癘盞絏

穝穦祅癘

玻珇/砯腹

琩高

砞

闽超怠

Your English is just plain bad in the following areas:

quality fully guaranteed! (exclamation not in the original; translation is inaccurate representation of original text)

produce products

, which are being sold all over the world (sounds like children\'s writing--overuse of passive)

passed medical or healthcare standard (definite markers)

EEC of United Kingdom (definite markers)

by national medical and technological research institute of Singapore. (definite markers, awkward syntax)

It has been proved that they been proved that they (you\'ve got to be kidding me--you call this English??)

etc (punctuation)

and certificates have been issued (unparallel structure)

also absolutely with no bad effects on your health (children\'s writing? syntax, unprofessional terminology)

Attentions: (obvious grammar mistake)

1.Avoid (punctuation)

2.The (punctuation)

get to know inner conditions of your skin (definiteness, terminology)

PH value moisture (spelling, terminology)

help your skin get balanced (children\'s writing? unprofessional syntax)

4.For (punctuation)

the essences of natural flowers (terminology)

born-of-nature allergic skin (terminology, awkward)

to climate changes (grammar)

5.For (punctuation)

beauty care products, although these products are moisturized (punctuation, run-on)

wither blood capillary (definiteness)

Although NB purified skin care products to optimize the skin (grammar, punctuation)

To shine your skin again, (terminology)

Membranes (?!?!?!? terminology)

Clear the dirty in pores and after a period the pores is free (obviously horrible grammar)

Now you have a shiny skin again (hah!, definiteness, terminology)

6.For (punctuation)

for the skins (definiteness)

and endocrine disorder occurred (punctuation, run-on, grammar, transitivity)

or in physiological period (series, punctuation, run-on)

or poisonous element easy carriers (series, punctuation, run-on, awkward structure, nonsense, nonsense, nonsense, nonsense)

, these troubles bother continuously (bad bad bad grammar, and yes these bothers I very continuousing)

Find a NB professional teacher to help you (Yes, find a GRAMMAR teacher to help YOU)

to help you to clear (misuse of \'to\' after \'help\' as verb-American English)

make it well treated. (grammar)

can approach in the same time to treat your body both inner and outer for a recovery. (hahah, what is this? grammar, syntax, run-on, you name it!)

7.Each (you mean to tell me you do this on purpose, again and again, like you\'ve never heard of putting a space after a period?)

more than 2000 professional beauty care technological chain store (uh, try a plural?)

proved (incorrect preterite)

although for there have allergic skin (I\'m speechless here!!!??)

whose skin is sensitive a particular material (prepositions--how can we get by without them???)

or sensitive to food or have (series, run-on, come on!)

have their guidance to have your shiny skin recovered to (did you forget to finish your grammatically incorrect sentence here?)

William,

Look, when a translation comes in this bad, (and not just once, but two articles), including the fact that you did not finish the complete assignment I sent you on time (missing the deadlines), there\'s nothing we can do but to let you go. And we cannot give you payment for such horrible quality work, but we will pay a deducted rate for the Chinese translation. You can re-read our policies: it\'s all there and quite plain for everybody to see. You didn\'t follow through on policies 6, 7, 8. Your writing just isn\'t qualified enough.

For payment on the Chinese translation this evening, please send your Paypal account information to our accountant at [email protected]. We pay all members working outside Taiwan through Paypal.

Regards,

Glossika Staff

Dear William,

This is not acceptable, because all of our translations are done in Traditional Chinese format for Taiwan. You already know that we are a Taiwanese company, so our Taiwan clients cannot accept the Traditional Chinese format. Could you please fix it for us as soon as possible.

Dear Translators,

We have a project for translation from Chinese to English, 1 page. View the attached files. Please contact us if you are interested, payment is NT$260. This must be completed by 22:00, Tuesday, March 5th, CHINA TIME.

After confirmation from us, you may start the project. Please view our policies below about pricing and work quality.

Mike

Glossika Translation

NB: You are receiving this email because you are on our mailing list as an English to Chinese translator. If you feel you have received this message in error, please respond and let us know and we will place you on the correct mailing list. Change the subject in your email to: Mailing List.

POLICIES:

We negotiate the price of each project with the client and translators are paid a percentage of that price usually ranging from 70 to 80% of the budget. If you want to do an assignment we post, you need to be the first to respond. Projects are usually started within a few hours of sending out a request. Many of our translators are standing by for new assignments. Not all of our assignments are sent out by request as we have regular translators regularly on call for new assignments and they take priority assignments.

Send us a sample of your work so that you can be placed higher up on our priority list. For example if we get more than one response back at the same time, of course the assignment goes to the person we value more highly. If you get the opportunity to do translations for us, we can easily assess the quality of your work and you will be placed accordingly in our priority list.

Our policies include:

1. There are two ways of sending translations back to us: Substitute original text with target language, or write target language below each paragraph of source text. We will specifically tell you if we require the second method. The first method is to maintain the format and structure of the original document especially in outlined material like business plans and contracts and this is the format we prefer.

2. We expect translators to have the ability of manipulating and managing tables, charts, arrows and lines, etc. in Microsoft Word. It is not difficult to learn. Most of the text found inside tables and charts can be replacedmaybe not directly, but by double clicking you can go in and adjust the parameters and text.

3. Make sure all of your text has the appropriate language settings. Run a spell check if you have it available for your language. Our editors donˇt have the ability to check spellings for many kinds of languages. We wonˇt accept English language documents back with language settings set in other languages. It doesnˇt make sense, and it leaves a lot of red underlined text.

4. Please be aware: your pay will be deducted for each and every Chinese punctuation mark left in a foreign language document, and the same goes for foreign language punctuation marks left in a Chinese document. We skim the documents for quality and can catch these very quickly. If we find them left in there, we must send them to an editor to complete the work and this costs extra money taken from your pay.

5. Names of people, addresses, government departments, and companies, if not supplied by us, must be researched. We have found that those not translated by our workers, our in-house team can find about 95% on the Internet. This means that translators didn\'t do the appropriate research (and it need not take very long to find answers on the Internet). All others not found must be placed in red, and we will ask the client to be understanding or supply the terms themselves. All names and addresses from China should use pinyin; those from Taiwan should have Taiwanese spelling. A very big mistake is putting pinyin for Taiwanese names and addresses and we will not accept it since it is not customary practice in Taiwan. We do not accept any translator comments in translations. These must be written outside of the document in an email.

6. The most serious offense is making up translations for the aforementioned areas. If you write a company name or govˇt dept. name that we catch as incorrect, or worse, made up, you will not be paid and you wonˇt work for us again. You can search Google, Yahoo! locales (Taiwan, China), the Taiwan Directory, etc. to get the right terms.

7. Deadlines are very important, especially if extra work needs to be done on your document. We have our own deadlines to meet and our management is not very forgiving to those who hand in work past deadlines.

Please try to keep your mailboxes cleaned out, especially Hotmail and Yahoo! users. Use a separate account just for translation purposes, as many projects have large file sizes. If we continue to receive returned mail, your email will eventually be removed from our mailing list. We recommend Hotmail and Yahoo! users to get another email account in order to send out large file sizes as there are many limitations. Remember to maintain professionalism.

We look for people who are quick to respond, always follow up quickly, have great attitudes, have great quality writing and translation skills, are accurate, meet requested deadlines, and always confirm everything with us. If you do this, you will get much more work from us.

First, I would like to tell Li-chuan that our client decided not to do the project (which we were willing to give her because she\'s very close and had the right qualifications and price). We posted it as a potential project and were trying to get the best price for the client. However, the client did not want to do it because the price was still too high.

Hello, Mike

Welcome to the Chinese Forum and thank you for giving us your side of the story! Now we have a more complete picture. I do feel like having opened a Pandora box. There is quite a bit of information to read. I have read your messages for 2-3 times and will try to read them again in order to have a better understanding of this matter. The good news is that we have a good collection of translators and translation agencies at ProZ.com. As for myself, I am a translator and also a translation coordinator. I am sure we can come up with some good recommendations and constructive suggestions. I encourage everyone to share with us your cool-headed thoughts and objective opinions on this matter.

Dear Mike and YangJS,

Thank you for letting me and other translators to have the opportunity to learn both sides of the story. I read all the messages you posted in this Forum. I felt your pains and frustrations. Overall I think you both have handled it reasonably civil. I think we should put it to an end. Lets move on and think over how to perform better tomorrow. Like you both said in your messages, we do not want wars. If love is too far fetch here, I think considerate is the word which will work among all of us.

To look at this dispute positively, you both were trying to get the highest quality possible in your translation work. But the problem is that your expectations are different and misunderstood by each other. I also see the gaps in the communication between you two. One thing led to another, and we got to where we are today. I thought about this over a day. If you can pardon me, I would like to say that both of you were trying to do your job well, unfortunately both attributed to the problem. The responsibility is 50/50. That means each of you would be caned 50 times as the Chinese Emperor would order in the old times.

As the moderator in this Forum, please let me say a few words to both of you. My interest is to have everyone learn something positive from this dispute, and something that everyone can remember so as to prevent such situation from happening again.

As a translation coordinator, Mike, I think it is very risky for you to hire a Chinese translator, who does not have lengthy living and education experience in an English- speaking country, to perform a Chinese to English translation and meet a standard you expected. As a well-educated American like yourself, you know what you are expecting from an English translation, but YangJS has no clue about your expectation and quality standard as he perhaps never lived in America and English is not his native language. I have lived in America for 18 years now, my English has no way to compare with my Chinese which is my native language. To select the appropriate translator, one quick way to find out the translators English level is to have the translator perform a short sample translation, or exchange emails in English. By doing these checking and testing, you can quickly get the idea what kind of English you are going to get.

I dont think YangJS was not honest with you when he told you he could translate from Chinese to English. He might have done some English translations for other clients. The thing is, all the companies are different. Some companies he translated for might have an editor in house to polish YangJSs English translation and they expected his English to be less perfect. This led to another suggestion, if you have to hire a Chinese translator to translate something into English, it is always recommended that you should pair him/her up with an native English speaker as editor. When you fail to do all these work mentioned above, your project is doomed to have hiccups.

As a Chinese translator, YangJS, you should always tell your client clearly how much work you can handle. If your client is pushy and makes you to work overloaded, you should cream laud and clear to tell him/her the volume is over your limit and you cannot handle anymore. If he is not responding your email, send the second, the third email, and/or fax. Anyone would get your point. I think it is very wrong for you to have a translation job in hand and let it pass the due date for whatever reason. I can understand why Mike is so mad at you. It is obviously that he did not get the message you sent about you cannot handle the volume of his work anymore because he is still expecting the translation back from you on time. If you have his job in hand, you should keep sending emails and faxes until he responds and confirms. I know in large offices, sometime emails can get lost or misplaced. So it is always a good idea to send more than one email, and also cc it to other email addresses of the person(s) you try to reach. I know Asian people tend to give soft rejection and declination for face-saving purpose. It does not work very well with westerners because it can be misleading. Please learn to say No in a firm and definite manner.

If you felt you are under paid, then negotiate with your client for a better rate. Remember, you can only negotiate for a better rate BEFORE you accept a job, never and never make such a request after you have accepted or have completed a job. It is a free market, you can ask any rate you want, and the client can decide who they want to work with for a job.

We all should educate the clients that it is not wise to rush a translation job, because quality will have to compromise when a translation is rushed, no matter how good a translator is. I think all the translators should learn to turndown rush jobs. I rarely work on rush jobs, especially those rushed without a good reason. I learned painful lesson by working overnight to get rush translation job done, and later the client still would tell you numeral mistakes found. So I never do rush job. As an established translator, your goal is to provide translation that stands for any challenges. Rush job usually cannot help you to build your good clientele, but can easily make damages. Many translation agencies know it is hard to push translators like me for a rush job, instead they went to Asia to work with those translators who are easier to get a job. But the point is, no matter where the translator is at, any human being will make mistakes if he or she is tired and has no time left for proofreading and quality checking.

In case you cannot turndown a rush job, before you accept the job, please make the client understand the feasibility to get the job done on time, and the possible cutting corner in the translation process anticipated. Then write all down in the form of an agreement, stating clearly that the translator will try his/her utmost to complete the translation by the time specified with the best of his/her knowledge and capability. Because of the rush nature, the quality and accuracy of the translation might be compromised. The client will accept and pay for the translation produced by the translator AS IS by XXXXXX (specific payment date). Then, ask you client to have an authorized manager to sign and print his/her name and job title. Be sure also date it. Such an agreement will really make your client to think twice if it is really worth the effort to proceed. It also protects the translator if there is a backfire after the translation is completed.

Well, I have said what is in my mind for now. It would be nice to see Mike and YangJS can work out a dollar amount as payment for YangJSs service. I would love to see you both can shake hand and let go the unpleasant feelings. Lets end it here! Take care and good luck!

We could not guarantee his background when he lies. When he contacted us and told us that he\'d been to so many places and speaks English perfectly and had requested projects so many times...we should have known better he was trying to stir up trouble. For all we know, the way he lies, he could be a little child who likes to manipulate people.

Before he started any of our projects, our policies were posted in the emails and he could see that we would not pay if the translation was not of quality standard. He took it at his own risk and can consider it a practice run.

We don\'t really care what you guys are bickering about in this forum. We never posted anything without facts and proof (translations, texts, emails). He has never posted proof, all lies. We did not press him to do our translations, we have many others willing to do them. He was so eager to do them, but he screwed up. He only did one document for the NB website out of more than 100! We did not have these problems with any of the other translators. All he has to do is read our policy and understand that he is not going to get paid. He took the assignments at his own risk because we had to find somebody else to translate the materials.

This guy is like a bomb waiting to explode. He needs to see a psychiatrist before he accidentally goes out and kills somebody. He has called our offices yelling at our secretaries and they have no idea what he\'s talking about. This guy has mental problems. And nobody knows his background. He doesn\'t sound stable.

On the other hand, we have a stable and ethical business environment.

One other thing, we\'re not sure why you\'re the one controlling all of these conversations. Your face itself has popped up on quite a number of bad postings together with William Yang\'s writing so it\'s already quite obvious you are in cahoots with him. So I\'m sure a lot of people are wondering why you\'re together with him sharing his experience when you\'ve never done work for us. We cannot tell if you are lying. Good luck to you.

I hope you all have fun at that forum if it keeps you busy. Real translators will have their work to do and ignore your forums.

Dear email sender and our translators:

I just received this email. It was sent to my personal email address. Now let me share it with you. By the way, sender, I do have a name. My name is Kevin Yang. What is your name, may I ask?

What kind of person you are or company you have should be judged by the others, not by yourself. You tried so hard to pain your eye brows, I think you tried too hard, now they look like two pieces of black tapes stuck on your forehead. I think this email from you tells me a lot about you as a person. When you do not know how to respect the others, you do not get respect back.

I am a proud American Chinese, and English is my second language. You are right, my English is not perfect, but my English is certainly better than you Chinese.

Relax, I am doing a volunteer job here as a moderator in the Chinese Forum. Sorry to hear my picture irritates you. I guess you have to live with it for a while.

I thought Taiwan is a beautiful island. But I do not see any beauty in your email. I wonder why?

Sincerely,

Kevin

Kevin,

We understand now. Do not call yourself American; you neither understand nor stand for American values.

You\'re deceitful, lying, dishonest, unegalitarianistic, prejudiced, undemocratic, repressive (of free speech), untrustworthy, devious, insincere, and indirect.

These are all opposite of American values. You are a communist and a virus in America. Let those in China be communist and leave them be. This YangJS is an egocentric child. But you know better. Of course, you have the right to express brotherhood with your compatriots, but you should not act like a communist, especially on American soil.

Why have you not posted all of Glossika\'s remarks in the forum? You are not democratic and there is a constitutional right to FREEDOM of speech in a FREE country. We have done nothing but defend ourselves and provide proof and yet you even dare mock. Shame on thyself!

Post this email there too, if you want. Everyone may then understand how insincere you are and how you cannot be trusted.

You have offered us plenty to read. Now I learned that personal attack and prejudice are filled in you emails. I do not think I need to add more because the readers can tell by reading your emails, and we five folders of them to read. Enjoy! Kevin
