This is very useful information, but I still don\'t know the correct way to write
ca. EURO 205.000,--
in English. Is there a rule regarding whether it should be EUR or EURO? Should the EUR follow or precede the number?
[ This Message was edited by: on 2002-07-27 15:38 ] | | | approx. EUR 250.000 | Jul 27, 2002 |
with figures, in English you use EUR, always before the figure
Have a nice weekend | |

when used, currency symbols are closed up: $100, #120 (# replaces here the euro symbol)
12.11 Where the sum is written in words, use the form shown in the table above (there is a table with all currencies): a sum of two million German marks, two million euros.
12.12 The euro. Always write the word \'euro\' in lower case with no initial capital.
In tables and documents where monetary amounts figure largely, make maximum use of abbreviation EUR (before the amount) or the symbol \'..\' (close up to the figure).
Guidelines on the use of the euro, issued via the Secretariat-General, state that the plurals of both \'euro\' and \'cent\' are to be written without \'s\' in English. Do this when amending or referring to legal texts that themselves observe this rule. Elswhere, and especially in documents intended for the general public, use natural plural with \'s\' for both terms.
12.13 Use a point to separate units from subunits: price: FRF7.20; BEF 50.- \"
Hope this helps, Kim.
The extracts come from June 2001 edition, which was then available at: http://europa.eu.int/comm/translation/en/stygd/index.htm.
Magda
PS They are really messing up with those plurals...

In Britain we generally use common symbols like £ and $ and now the € symbol is becoming more well known. I\'ve even seen the Germans using recently. You wouldn\'t write approx GBP205,000, you would use the £. I think Europeans as a whole will slowly get used to using €. | | | Point versus comma | Jul 28, 2002 |
We have always to convert points in commas, In this case EUR 250,000

EUR 250,000 and EURO 250,000. I\'ve always presumed this was dicated by the keyboard (absence of the character, etc.) Also with spaces (handy for data base file transfers).

I am a bit surprised at Magda\'s reference to the EU translation service\'s convention, which is in contradiction to an EU website I found (http://europa.eu.int/euro/html/dossiers/00718/00718-en.pdf) that states that \"euro\" was to be used for both singular and plural. Of course, this has no bearing on your immediate problem, I just thought I\'d mention it. ▲ Collapse | | | Robin Salmon (X) Australia Local time: 04:47 German to English + ...
