I wonder if anyone has had this problem.



The clock on my computer is losing time - rapidly. Over the last few months it has been losing a few minutes every couple of weeks or so, but for the last three days it\'s been going haywire! When I switched the computer on this morning, I found it was December 31st 1998. Not only that, it told me it had changed the time to summertime! It seems to keep time ok when the computer is on, so I\'m wondering if these things have a back... See more

It seems to keep time ok when the computer is on, so I\'m wondering if these things have a back-up battery somewhere to keep the clock going when it\'s switched off. If this is the case then I suppose all I need is a new battery. Can anybody confirm this?

Sounds like your CMOS battery is running low... Jul 26, 2002

The CMOS battery is usually located on your computer\'s motherboard. Here\'s a link I\'ve found with some explanations:

NOTE: If you\'re unsure about this (and, with all due respect, your question would indicate that you are...), get a trained engineer to check your machine.

Have to reset the time whenever I start my laptop Jul 27, 2002

I have a related problem and would also be glad of some tips... I don\'t have the problem with my clock losing time, but whenever I start my laptop (it\'s an IBM ThinkPad), I have to reset the time and date on it before the OS will load (an error code appears and then the time/date display appears showing midnight on the 1st. January 1997. I then have to reset it, switch the thing off and start all over again).

You\'re right, I am unsure about this. I went to the link you gave and I think it\'s clear I\'ll have to get someone in to sort it out because it\'s way beyond my tiny little brain! I\'ve made a note of the link, though, as it looks very useful.

Hi Paola,

That\'s something that shouldn\'t be happening on a new machine - I would suggest to contact the dealer you bought it from, and to have them check whether the motherboard needs to be replaced. The CMOS battery on newer motherboards is usually non-replaceable...

Before rushing off to the specialists and submitting your clock and its motherboard to a lot of invasive therapy, why not try talking the thing through?

When we perceive madness in the world around us, it sometimes helps to pause for reflection and – particularly important – discuss the way that we feel and try to understand the way that others feel!

You may find, after you have both opened up, that maybe your clock was feeling pressured, maybe you were making “unreasonable” demands on it, willing it to change the natural course of time by going slower, faster, or even backwards as the situation seemed to demand. This kind of conflict can subject a timepiece to an enormous amount of stress and may even result in behaviour that could be loosely described as madness, but is actually no more than a logical reaction in the circumstances. Remember, a little love and understanding will make all the difference, and if you do have to go to the specialists, then you will be better equipped to face the experience together.
