Looking for CAT tools that support IDML format Thread poster: Jaypb
|
Hey everyone, What CAT tools would you recommend for translating IDMLs? I'm looking to try out about 2 or 3 of the most highly recommended ones. A preview for IDMLs would also be a perk, as our translators don't have InDesign on each of their machines. Please also let me know what other features you enjoy about the CAT tools, provided they support IDMLs. Thanks, Jay

Works absolutely fine. No preview is possible unless you have InDesign, but the client always sends me a PDF along with IDML, so I can see what I am actually translating.

Transit NXT includes preview | Feb 11, 2015 |
Transit NXT supports IDML (requires additional filter as long as I know) and includes preview of the quevelant PDF in the preview panel. You can ask STAR for a trail version to text this and many other features, like very powerful filters and search options, the advanced "Mark up" concept (instead of tags), which among others creates terminology entries in the dictionary window "Automatically" by itself, beside many other strong features in this amazing, yet not well marketed CAT.... In the same editor there is a powerful software localization editor, that also provides live preview of the localized target software GUI. In this Window, you can even customize the actual resulting GUI elements like button sizes to suite the length of the text to be put on each element. Actually, there are a lot of very useful feature in Transit NXT, that I don't currently remember, because unfortunately I haven't used it for a long time now. Also Memoq includes the preview option and many useful features, but I'm not sure, how the preview works. I hope, this could be helpful for you Best regards Abdullah

Is a Preview of the source sufficient or do you also need an on-the-fly generated Preview of the target text?

Same with memoQ. When I am finished, I send the IDML file "rough status" and client sends immediatly a PDF file back. I can make some changes, essentially layout, titles, and then send my final version. I have try to find a free IDML viewer software for preview but could not find any.

You can translate IDML files using Swordfish. Regards, Rodolfo

Thank you very much for all of your responses. This advice should be very helpful. 2nl wrote: Is a Preview of the source sufficient or do you also need an on-the-fly generated Preview of the target text? 2nl, I don't have a specific preference on this, mostly just a preview of the source, but now that you mention it, an accurately generated preview of the target could be a great plus as well. I used to work a lot with Western Standard's Fluency. That had a preview function that worked pretty well from my recollection. I'm going to try out a trial when I have time. Has anyone used Fluency lately?
