I need a tutorial (textbook, manual) on computer-aided translation: what software to choose, how to use it... I know about Translator's Tool Box. Maybe there are free resources?

Wordfast tutorials

Although I don't use Wordfast, I found the tutorials on the Wordfast site pretty useful. As long as you don't get into the details of which keyboard combination you have to press, the basic principles of various CAT-tools are the same. Therefore tutorials for one tool are useful for most others, when it comes to grasping the whole idea of the software. As for the choice of software - many of the CAT products have free trial versions or free limited edition versions. Although I have not tried a lot of different products, I think maybe the easiest way to get acquainted with the whole concept is to start with Wordfast tutorials as a source of information and either with Wordfast or with MetaTexis to play with. They both have free limited versions, the limits being slightly different - Wordfast is free with a translation memory (TM) limit, where MetaTexis has a free fully functional demo, which expires in 2 months and changes into the free Lite version, which is somewhat limited, but with no TM limits. I think that MetaTexis is a little bit easier to use. And do read the forums around here. There are plenty of useful discussions on these topics, both now and from some time ago. ▲ Collapse

When you need to share TM among different CAT tools, this is a must have feature. ▲ Collapse
