That being said, if the main purpose of the preview is to see exactly where the translation will fit in without having to keep the source file open or search through the exported target file, you don’t necessarily need a live target text preview (although it will definitely be a welcome improvement also in this case), just a live preview.

CafeTran already offers two source preview features:

Resources > Source preview (HTML) and Source preview (website).

Source preview (HTML):

This opens a new resource tab that shows the corresponding source file (in HTML format), and highlights the position of the current segment as it is being translated.

This completely offline method works particularly well for Microsoft Office and LibreOffice documents, since they can be exported to HTML.

It requires a simple additional step. Open your document in Microsoft Office or LibreOffice and export it as a Web Page (*.htm, *.html). Then open it via Resources > Source preview.

CafeTran opens this as a new tab, which you can arrange in all the ways tabs can be arranged in CafeTran (too many to mention).

This works for native AND external projects

For native projects, any opened HTML source preview is remembered across sessions if you close and reopen CafeTran or the project, so you don't have to repeat that step.

Source preview (website):

This lets you open a source preview via a web or cloud service such as Microsoft Office Live and Dropbox.

Tip: Merab, if you haven’t already, you might wish to explore the available Window layout options in the View menu. They offer different ways to organize your resources and CafeTran’s components (the Grid, the Tabbed pane, the Source and Target segment editors, the Matchboard - the latter is a tab, but should be visible at all times, whatever the layout you choose) depending on your preference, workflow, screen resolution, etc.

The Grid provides segments navigation and context, including some formatting indications for native documents (which is useful, although you may still wish to check the live preview for some documents), but also serves for project concordance search, filtering and find/replace operations, which is great.

Hi Jean. Thank you very much for the information. Indeed, those are useful features, but the only thing they do is showing the source file in a separate tab, as opposed to showing it as a separate file.

Just figure out a situation where you have a piece of source text that has, say, 300 characters and you want to know if the target text (which is expected to be, say, 400 characters) will fit in certain place/box/line.

Déjà Vu, for example, shows you a replica of the file in a pane below and you see on the go how the source is transformed into target. Consequently, you can make adjustments on the go too (for example, use less “taxing” syntaxis o decide to apply a hard break, etc.).

In other words, if Déjà Vu has it, why not CafeTran? It’s not about “how” CafeTran works; rather, it’s about “what” it does.

In any case, I will continue using CafeTran for the moment and the lack of live target preview feature will certainly not put me off. It still is a nice to have feature, though, and I wish CafeTran developers listened and reacted accordingly, for the benefit of the company and the entire community.

Agreed! Nov 29, 2018

My mentioning of the source preview feature was triggered by the need to check "where this or that piece of text fits" as you put it in a previous post. Since target file export or preview is not available for external projects, and formatting information (headings, etc.) is not shown for these file types, quickly viewing where some text belongs can be truly useful.

My mentioning of the source preview feature was triggered by the need to check "where this or that piece of text fits" as you put it in a previous post. Of course, source preview does not show how the target text will fit in, which can be an important piece of information as well, since it might indeed require some rewording (this can be combined with the fact CafeTran shows the source:target character count on the bottom status bar).

I certainly did not want to imply source preview could replace a live target preview.

Let me restate it would definitely be a great improvement over the current "Preview current document" implementation.

Déjà Vu has it, but it isn't a cross-platform tool. In that respect, most "major" CAT tools fall short in comparison to CT.

Developing a cross-compatible product makes some features (such as a workable integrated PDF viewer) more tricky to implement.

However, the fact another such tool (WF) uses a cross-platform live preview solution (as the one Hans suggested) means it can be done.

Anyway, CafeTran's development and attention to user feedback so far only makes one confident about the future
