If you ask me, agencies that dont reply after you've done a test for them are simply rude. Or perhaps its their way to tell the translator "to get lost". Seriously, if they dont want to deal with another aplicant wouldnt it be easier to ignore the application as such? Its way better than to ignore work translator has dedicated to that test. Sincerely, its just one more reason why I dont do test translations or do them just in cases when I really want to get that job.;)

Another appalling practice.... Apr 3, 2007

A few years ago, when I was just starting up, I downloaded a few test passages from an agency based in the Netherlands. They had several test passages for each source language, depending on subject-matter, and also a warning that they were not interested in the following language combinations, followed by quite a long list. As neither of my pairs was mentioned, I thought I’d give it a try, and spent some days polishing my efforts, because I wanted to make a good impression and, having just sta... See more
A few years ago, when I was just starting up, I downloaded a few test passages from an agency based in the Netherlands. They had several test passages for each source language, depending on subject-matter, and also a warning that they were not interested in the following language combinations, followed by quite a long list. As neither of my pairs was mentioned, I thought I’d give it a try, and spent some days polishing my efforts, because I wanted to make a good impression and, having just started, I didn’t have much else to do.

So, after all this hard work, I submitted my test translations, only to hear nothing for a couple of weeks, followed by “Sorry, but we’ve got enough translators in your combinations!” Personally, I think it was more misleading to list some of the combinations they weren’t interested in than to remain silent on the issue. Far better would be to have a list headed “Currently, we’re looking for translators in the following language pairs....” That way, if your combination is not listed, you can decide not to waste your time. Still, they would probably forget to update it, leading to the same problem I had.

Just been asked to do another one... May 1, 2007

Hello all,
I found this topic by searching for "test translations", as I've just been asked to translate 700 words, unpaid, on a subject which isn't one of my areas of specialisation. Or, rather, it's a different area of one of my specialisations, but one which I am not comfortable doing. I've written back explaining this (having already sent an email, and a cv, and a questionnaire detailing my areas of specialisation *sigh*), and requesting a test more appropriate to my experience, as wel

Hello all,
I found this topic by searching for "test translations", as I've just been asked to translate 700 words, unpaid, on a subject which isn't one of my areas of specialisation. Or, rather, it's a different area of one of my specialisations, but one which I am not comfortable doing. I've written back explaining this (having already sent an email, and a cv, and a questionnaire detailing my areas of specialisation *sigh*), and requesting a test more appropriate to my experience, as well as one half the length! We'll see what they say... the sad part is that I'd quite like to work with this agency - they are a big name - but i've fallen foul of this before. I've spent many hours doing LENGTHY, multi-page tests for BIG companies, only to hear "we're entering you into our database", never to be heard from again. Last year, I did a timed, 3-hour test for an agency which never even responded, either to my test or my follow-ups. As someone has already mentioned, there seem to be a large number of agencies which send huge tests and demand references and certificates in triplicate, yet never send a single translation request. It seems to be the agencies who don't bother with tests that treat translators and their time with more respect.

grrrr....
