Dear forum lurkers and posters, As someone whose business just began really taking off this year (after a slow and easy two-year start-up) I have been drowning in paperwork and billing matters. See more Dear forum lurkers and posters, As someone whose business just began really taking off this year (after a slow and easy two-year start-up) I have been drowning in paperwork and billing matters. I was using a freebie non-specialist billing program; dealing with invoices was sometimes taking almost as long as the translation itself -- not to mention document and folder management, wordcounts, calculations of wordcount times rate, discounts, taxes, rush mark-ups, etc. Yesterday I discovered Translation Office 3000 (okay I had heard it about a while ago) and today I am in seventh heaven. In the time that it would have taken me (maybe) to do just this month's billing, etc., I have set up this new system, entered my clients, and also entered all previous billing from the beginning of this year. (Okay, customizing the invoice form, which is fully modifiable in Word, to suit my taste did take some time.) It does things that I was only dreaming that such a management system would do. For example, when I get I job, entering it requires nothing more than a couple clicks and entering the project name. The necessary client folders are all created automatically, numbered and labelled with required information. To bill the job, a couple more clicks, any open (completed) jobs are automatically picked up for billing; I click a button for the wordcount, select the billing unit, click a couple more buttons and the invoice is done. There is much more to look at. If you are an agency or running larger projects with multiple translators, you might want to look further, but if you are a freelancer, a year or two into the business, suffering from the feeling that the more you work the worse things are getting, and have 150 € to spare (I would have paid twice this much), then take a look. It has a thirty-day trial period. http://www.translation3000.com/translators.html -Kevin My best spent money so far: 1. Wordfast 2. ProZ.com (alone for the web-hosting) 3. Translation Office 3000 4. (way too many dictionaries to mention)

Good choice with TO3000! I've been using it for about 2 years now and I'm delighted. And as regards your "best spent money so far" list (I would add "for the translation business"), I have the same exact list
Hi Kevin, Absolutely! I've been using this since I started and - although I have nothing to compare it with - I think it's great. K. | | | Samuel Murray Netherlands Local time: 20:41 Member (2006) English to Afrikaans + ... What program did you use previously? | Mar 5, 2006 |

It's on the other system and not accessible right now, but was from some small shareware company in Australia I think; with a name like "QuickInvoice" or something similar (but not sure). Cost me perhaps €25 or so. -Kevin
I love translating but I absolutely hate doing the paperwork, keeping track of it, invoices, billing, organizing the folders, etc. so I needed a software that would do the work for me. I started using the trial version of TO3000 this last week and within the first hour I knew it was exactly what I needed. Absolutely worth the price, and it'll pay itself with all the time (and headaches) it will save me. Every translator should be using this software. Claudia | | | I couldn't agree more | Mar 5, 2006 |
Its versatility let me adapt job and invoice lists and bill layouts just as what they looked like when painstakingly using Excel sheets for managing my business. So the upgrade to TO3000 was not even confusing at first sight. Definitely worth its price when you consider the time saved each end of month. Also in my don't-regret list, Dragon Naturally Speaking 8.0 Preferred to alleviate my typing stress (I still can type 30 words/min with 6 fingers should the need arise, but now I feel more ... Thanks, Elizabeth Hill You can certainly post any questions here, if you like (as far as I know). They did answer all 3 of my support questions, though in one case it took a couple days.
