I live in Canada. I was recently referred to a new client in Argentina. I completed the work and submitted an invoice in Word format. They told me that they can't accept it because I don't have a "cuit" number. They also said that they can't accept an invoice in Word. I'm not sure what to do. I don't have a tax number because I don't charge tax (I'm a full time student right now). Does anyone with experience working with clients in Argentina have any suggestions? Thanks so much!

First of all, you can show a good gesture by using a software to transform your invoice in PDF, you can contact me privately if you don't have such a tool, and I'll be glad to do it for you...
Secondly, you need to contact the agency and explain to them kindly or "not so kindly" the fact that :
1/ If they don't pay you are going to put a bad blue board entry on ProZ.
2/ As you didn't sign anything forbidding you to do so, if they don't pay you, you'll just ... See more

3/ They should have put conditions before harvesting the work !
I worked for clients in Argentina and nobody asked me for any specific data, apart from a reference for the invoice and a bank account !
They are just trying to find excuses not to pay ! It happened to me with a client and after several reminders and threats she paid me six months later !
There is one point though, are you sure you can work in your country like this without any problem ? Anyway, it's not relevant to them, as they should have asked you before about the matter, it's more relevant for so that you don't break any law in your country...

Little wonder Argentina is still an 'emerging economy'.

I suggest you point out to this client that "of course you don't have a CUIT (Argentine tax ID number), because you are prohibited from obtaining one because you are a foreign national resident outside Argentina".
Also, ask them how Argentina expects to do business with the global economy if all Argentinian buyers/clients insist that all their suppliers must be registered for tax in their country.

Regardless of the answer (if there is one...) I suggest you print out your invoice and send it by snail mail - in the hope that they don't object to the colour of the paper you print it on, or the typeface.
It occurred to me that they may need my social insurance number and once I provided that, they had what they needed and paid me. They even paid me before the due date! Thank you all for your suggestions.
