Why should a translation agency expect a subcontractor to deal with their client?
I\'d like to hear your views.

very often PMs don\'t know the target language and are totally useless, so they ask the translator to explain whatever needs to be explained to their client. I find this very unprofessional and I usually stop working for these people.

I agree with the previous answer that often times PM\'s do not know the language or the subject and therefore have to depend on the subcontractor to deal with their client. However, other times it\'s pure laziness, they don\'t have the time or they would rather take the easy way out when dealing with a problem client (un bilingualito que se cree traductor). My suggestion Bertha is to charge them consultation fees.

Last year I had an appalling experience. I did a huge translation [ english into spanish] for an USA agency whose owner-PM translates italian into english. The client was russian, spoke very bad english and worse spanish. However, the client wanted to \"correct\" my spanish. One of his \"corrections\" went: You should write LOS radiaciones instead of LAS radiaciones. No comments.

Los radiaciones...increíble...me recuerda otro cliente que insistía en que \"to file a suit\" era \"archivar un traje\" y \"hit or miss\" \"darle un golpe a la señorita\"...¿qué te puedo decir?

... porque ese cliente era ruso, vivía en Estados Unidos y pretendía corregir mi español. Lo peor es que la gente de la agencia, para no correr el riesgo de que su cliente no les pagara, le decían a todo que sí... A mi me pedían disculpas, pero corregían según las indicaciones del cliente quien, además, quiso ahorrarse el proofreading...Todo con el cuento de que él sabía español.. Fue trágico...Yo terminé trabajando casi el doble y por el mismo dinero... Lidiar con clientes de otro... A mí me tocó ser PM durante tres años en una agencia. Jamás se me hubiera ocurrido pedirle a un traductor(a) mío(a) que hablase con uno de mis clientes.
Ahora la misma agencia me envía trabajo de traducción (freelance). Mi ex-jefe me ha pedido muchas veces que le hable al cliente para explicarle esto o aquello. Y eso que él si habla perfecto inglés y español...nada de archivar trajes y cosas por el estilo... flojonazo, ni revisa los textos antes de enviármelos, no sabe ni lo...
