docx.xlf file checking out and saved as .txt ?

Good evening ,
I need a little bit of technical support with .xlf files.
Important to be said that I never worked with this kind of extension before.

I received a docx.xlf file to translate, I work on it with ACROSS but I face two main problems:
1. repetitions.One sentence is repeated at least 2/3 times
2. when I check out, after finishing the translation, it is saved as .txt , why??

It should not be like that. The file must have been somehow converted to txt. And a xlf as such has every segment twice anyway (most of the times). Something your client did by mistake (or so).
Not an Across problem, and no help without seeing the file, sorry.
