All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

अब यात्रा केवल कैमरे को एक जगह से दूसरी जगह ले जाने का माध्यम मात्र रह गयी है । सभी यात्री इस सर्व-शक्तिशाली लेन्स की इच्छानुसार चलते हैं । फ़ोटोग्रॉफ़र उन पर्यटकों को पीछे धकेल देते हैं जो अब भी इतने दकियानूसी हैं कि वे बस खड़े हो कर इस संसार को अपने कालदोषी नेत्रों से देखना चाहते हैं । ये फ़ोटोग्रॉफ़र यह मान कर चलते हैं कि जब वे अपने कैमरे को किसी वस्तु या स्थान पर केंद्रित करने की विधि पूरी कर रहे होते हैं उस दौरान किसी को भी उनकी नज़रों के सामने आने का कोई हक नहीं है । जिन अजीबोगरीब प्राणियों के पास कैमरा नहीं है उन्हें एक तरफ़ हो जाना चाहिए और उनके लिये रास्ता छोड़ देना चाहिए जो कि सही ढंग से काम करते हैं । ऐसे लोगों को चाहिए कि वे तब तक इंतज़ार करें जब तक कि यह विधि पूरी न हो जाये और जिस दौरान पूरी भरी हुई बसें आ कर रुकेंगी और इनमें बैठे फ़ोटोग्राफ़रों की भीड़ इन्स्टामैटिक ईश्वर को प्राकृतिक दृश्य पर खुला छोड़ देगी । और पूरे-पूरे देशों की जनता भौंचक्की हो देखती रह जायेगी और यह काले-छल्ले वाली आँख उन्हें पूरा निगल जायेगी और वे कोशिश करेंगे कि वे इन आदमखोरों से जितना बटोर सकें बटोर लें । तुम मेरे घर, मेरे ऊँट की तस्वीर खींचना चाहते हो? पैसे दो ।
शायद इस सब से कोई फ़र्क नहीं पड़ता अगर इससे कुछ महत्त्वपूर्ण काम किया जा रहा होता । अगर इस लगातार मेहनत और खट-खट से कुछ ऐसी नयी चीज़ बनती जो पहले नहीं थी या फिर यह तस्वीरें किसी ख़ास ख़ूबसूरती को कैद कर लेतीं या कोई सच्चाई बयान करतीं । मगर अफ़सोस, ऐसा नहीं है । कैमरा केवल दीवारों पर बेतरतीब लिखे शब्दों व चित्रों का एक सम्मानजनक रूप मात्र बन कर रह गया है ।
कैमरा वह माध्यम है जिससे हम जो भी देखते हैं उस पर अपनी छाप छोड़ देते हैं ... और तुर्रा यह कि हम संसार के अजूबों को दर्ज कर रहे हैं हांलांकि इन्हें हमसे पहले भी कई पेशेवर फ़ोटोग्राफ़रों ने बहुत सुंदर ढंग से अपने कैमरे में कैद किया है और यह तस्वीरें हर नुक्कड़ पर किताबों की दुकान और अख़बार बेचने वाले के पास मिल जातीं हैं । पर हमारे पीछे घर पर रहने वाली आँटी मॉड को इटली के टस्कनी इलाके के नज़ारों के पोस्टकॉर्ड दिखाने का क्या लाभ? चूँकि हम इन तस्वीरों में दिखाई नहीं देंगे तो उन्हें यह कैसे साबित करेंगे कि हम वहाँ मौजूद थे?
चट्टानें चाहे कितनी भी दूर तक फ़ैलीं हों, तब तक वे सत्यापित नहीं होतीं जब तक कि उनमें मैं नहीं हूँ । किसी भी स्मारक का अस्तित्व तब तक नहीं है जब तक एक लता की तरह उसका सहारा लिये मेरी पत्नी साथ न खड़ी हो । कोई भी मंदिर मेरे हंसते हुए चेहरे के बिना पूरा नहीं होता । अपने कैमरे से मैं हर ख़ूबसूरत चीज़ को अपना बना लेता हूँ, उसे छोटा कर, पालतू बनाता हूँ और फिर अपनी बैठक की खाली दीवार पर टांग देता हूँ जिससे कि मैं अपने दोस्तों और परिजनों की चुनी हुई दर्शकमंडली को इन सुंदर जगहों के बारे में इस अत्यावश्यक बात का प्रमाण दे सकूं कि मैंने इन्हें देखा है, मैं वहाँ गया था, मैंने इनकी तस्वीर खींची और इसलिये इनका अस्तित्व है ।
