Source text - English When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents.
So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns!
I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being.
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me.
And then I imagine the baby, still safe within the confines of my wife's belly, suddenly opening an alarmed eye as the thought enters his or her mind: "What if my dad just can't hack it?
Translation - French Lorsque ma femme m’annonça qu’elle était enceinte, je ressentis soudain cette sensation troublante qui vous prend aux tripes à l’approche de la descente d’un grand huit. J’étais ravi oui, mais…oh mon D…. Devenir père, c’était en fait réservé aux parents.
Je me tenais debout les yeux gros comme des billes, transpirant à grosses gouttes comme ces personnages de bandes dessinées grossièrement croqués ; les points d’interrogation flottant au dessus de ma tête alors que j’essayais de me préparer à prendre soin et l'entière responsabilité d’un autre être vivant aux cotés de mon chat. C’est à moi que revient la responsabilité de m’assurer que ce petit être ne devienne pas un horrible monstre. Si l’enfant devient un crétin social – ce sera ma faute. Si le petit chéri ne trouve pas le Luxembourg sur la carte, c’est moi qu’il faudra accuser de ne pas lui avoir donné une meilleure éducation. Il devra suivre une thérapie et bien entendu j’en serai également la cause. Tellement d’occasions de se tromper !
Je me souviens du jour où mon père m’a fait asseoir pour me raconter avec maladresse les histoires des oiseaux et des abeilles. Ce fut peut être là, la demi-heure de nos vies la plus insoutenable et la plus embarrassante. Je ne suis pas capable de faire cela à un autre être humain.
Je vais peut-être vite en besogne là. Je peux y arriver, me dis-je ; je serai un père extraordinaire. Mon enfant sera un citoyen du monde bien élevé , complet, bien éduqué et noble. Et il ou elle ne me haira pas.
Puis j'imagine alors le bébé, encore en sécurité dans les confins du ventre de ma femme, ouvrant soudain un œil inquiet alors que cette pensée envahit son esprit: « Et si mon père n’y arrivait pas ? »
